Iron deficiency during pregnancy

G. R. Peltecu, A. M. Panaitescu

Abstract: Anemia is the most frequent medical problem associated with pregnancy; 90% of anemia cases during pregnancy are due to iron deficiency. Diagnostic of iron deficient anemia is difficult because of hematological changes during pregnancy, but hemoglobin levels under 11 mg/dl must be considered pathological, especially when associated with low serum ferritin level. The increased requirements of iron during pregnancy cannot be meet by a normal diet, so WHO recommends the iron supplements during pregnancy.
