Actualităţi în diagnosticul de laborator al toxoplasmozei la gravide
New perspectives of diagnostic of toxoplasmosis during pregnancy

M. Popescu

Abstract: Toxoplasma gondii is an intracellular parasite which can spread and infect any mammalian species. During pregnancy congenital toxoplasmosis could determine serious fetal damage including hydrocephaly, cerebral calcifications, chorioretinitis, microcephaly, and other specific disorders. Objective. The purpose of this work was to assess current diagnostic tools of maternal Toxoplasma gondii (T gondii) infection and the risk of fetal damage. This was a observational study of 1872 patients including 72 % young women (18-42 ys) during period between jan - sept 2007. Results. In the study population the prevalence of T. gondii infection (IgG positive) was about 33.5 %, similar to other results of literature. About 3.7% of the IgG positive patients had evidence of current infection presenting IgM positive results for T gondii infection. Only 0.3 % had presented unreliable result for IgM test. Only one case presented IgM positive with IgG negative result. Conclusion. These data indicate the importance of correct assessment for toxoplasmosis according to existing international diagnostic guidelines for T. gondii infection.
